Last week it was announced that Spider-Man: Homecoming was officially back in Atlanta for reshoots before its July 7th release date. Our AMT Insiders are familiar with this version of Spider-Man because of its many days of shooting in the city and because of the use of locations near Miller’s Rexall Drugs in south downtown Atlanta which is featured in our Best of Atlanta Tour.
But as more and more shoots begin in Atlanta, our Insiders started to notice a pattern: There have been several cast members from the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black in Atlanta for various projects. No, unfortunately, OITNB isn’t moving down south for shooting; it’s going to stay in New York until its 7th season–unless it gets renewed for more. And, even then, Lynchfield is probably staying put. But before season 5 premieres in June and shooting resumes on the popular show, at least four members of the cast have been spotted or are rumored to be in Atlanta.
The cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming includes one Lynchfield inmate and Piper Chapman’s brother. Selenis Leyva who plays Gloria Mendoza in OITNB is playing Ms. Warren in the new Marvel film. Ms. Warren’s exact role in the movie isn’t clear, but many fans think that she could have a connection to Miles Warren who becomes The Jackal in the comics. Michael Chernus, who plays Piper’s brother Cal in OITNB, is taking on the roll of Marvel character Phineas Mason / Tinkerer. In the comics, The Tinkerer is an inventor who designs and creates weapons for criminals. Chernus’ portrayal will the the debut of the villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Taylor Schilling who plays main character Piper Chapman in OITNB, is also in Atlanta filming the indie comedy Fam-i-ly. This film is about Schilling’s relationship with her character’s niece who wants to run away from home to become a juggalo. Filming is already underway, and just last week there was a casting call for a campground scene. The filming was done over this past weekend (March 10-12), but from the listing it’s known that shooting was taking place in Decatur.
Lastly, Uzo Aduba, Crazy Eyes/Suzanne in OITNB, is in town filming yet another Netflix original. This time, it’s a feature film entitled Candy Jar. Production code signs labeled “CJ” were seen near Oglethorpe University in Brookhaven as well as in Chamblee over the weekend. Oglethorpe University acted as the team’s basecamp, and served as classrooms for shoots from March 8-12th. Not a lot is known about the plot of this film, except that the casting calls in Atlanta have been for high school aged students, including a call for “real high school debaters,” and “men and women–30’s to 50’s to portray art house movie patrons.” From the most recent casting call, for shooting taking place on March 17th, it’s to be assumed that majority of the next week or more of filming will be taking place in Newnan.
And Candy Jar may be here to stay–through post-production that is. Moonshine Post Production in Atlanta will be doing all of the post production work on the Netflix film. This is a big deal because when films shoot in Atlanta, they wrap, and they’re gone. With the addition of the post-production element, Atlanta will become the perfect city for filming because the tax incentives for film-makers will draw in projects, and they’ll be tempted to stay because editing can be down in the same city as potential reshoots.
As more filming begins, our Insiders will keep their eyes open for more celebrity sitings, but if you’re interested in potentially seeing a movie being filmed yourself, hop on to one of our tours. Because our buses go through the city to get to the majority of our locations, you never know what or who you might see! Tickets can be purchased here.
